About

The 3-storey Mill House is thought to date back to 1840. It's set in two acres of mature woodland with a stream and ponds that used to power a mill-wheel to grind the corn into flour. The coastal location is close to a significant event in world history, the sinking of the Lusitania in 1914. The resulting loss of 1200 lives triggered the entry of the US into WW1. Over the years, The Mill House had fallen into dereliction and was in a sorry state when it was saved by a local family in the early 1990's who set about restoring it to its former glory. A new roof, windows and staircase were added by the former owners to create a beautiful and comfortable family home.

The current owners Dave and Katie McGoff discovered The Mill back in 2016 when it came back on the market. They were delighted that so many original features had been retained or reclaimed. These include the stone and plaster walls and the curved Portland stone steps, salvaged from the historic Fota House in Cork and re-assembled as stairs to the first-floor level.

“The house was lovely, but I did want to make some changes more in keeping with our lifestyle and that of our guests "says Katie. She was in an excellent position to do that having changed careers from law to interior design; with Dave running a construction company and Simon Foley, the property manager, also being involved in the property development they had the ideal team.

Initially only cosmetic work was undertaken but that culminated in 2022 with a large refurbishment project. The first two floors were effectively turned upside down. The ground floor being converted into two en-suite bedrooms and the first floor living, dining and kitchen into a light filled open-plan space to take advantage of the first floor access to the extensive gardens. The surrounding gardens and outside areas were landscaped to create a large stone patio with zones with an outdoor lounge, sunbathing, dining, and kitchen. The recent addition, The Barn, was Dave's baby and born out of a desire to maximise it’s idyllic location with the stream running through the woodland and down to the sea below.

Katie and Dave retain Simon Foley to fully manage both the Mill and Barn in their absence. Additionally, he coordinates and hosts all the guests to both properties. Simon lives close by and is available to assist guests with any issues. Additionally, being a corkonion, his extensive knowledge of the local area is invaluable.

We look forward to your stay.
